Fall Festival of Fun

Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department along with Cobb County Public Safety, Safe Kids Cobb County and Cobb County 4-H are hosting the 13th Annual Fall Festival of Fun on Wednesday, October 31st at the Cobb County Safety Village. The event will begin at 4:00pm and end at 7:00pm. This event will provide the children of Cobb County a safe alternative to the traditional Trick-or-Treat in their neighborhoods.

The festival will include arts and crafts, games, inflatable rides, Police and Fire activities, costume and coloring contests, a photo booth and other surprises. Parking, entrance to the park, games, candy and contests are free (there is a fee for concessions and inflatable rides). Come wearing your Halloween costume and be sure to bring a bag to carry all of your candy!

Cheer Fest '12 at Cobb Civic Center

New Date - November 4th

Cobb will host the 5th Annual Cobb Cheer Fest at the Cobb Civic Center. This competition will be held on Sunday, November 4th. The Cheer Fest is an opportunity for recreational cheerleaders ages 5-14 to compete in cheer and dance.  Each team will have 2 minutes and 30 seconds to perform their routine that can be set to music.  Awards will be given to teams and individuals of the top three teams in each age category. Spectators are encouraged to support their favorite teams. Registration deadline is October 15th. For more information, please contact Wendy Collins or call (770) 528-8885.

 

Native Plants for Kids
Want to learn more about the native plants all around you? Heritage Park will be the location of a special kids' activity on Saturday, October 13th from 10:00am-12:00pm, hosted by Georgia Native Plant Society. Participants will be introduced to native plants and invasive exotics. There will be an emphasis on hands-on activities. The program is for children ages 5-14 and is free of charge. Parents should plan to remain with their children during the program. Contact kandcghosh@gmail.com by October 5th to enroll (space is limited).

Cobb Player Receives Award for Sportsmanship

Braeden Swilley of East Marietta National Little League, received his award as 2012 Little League 'Good Sport of the Year' at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Braeden plays at East Marietta National Little League at Sewell Park and was recognized for his "spirited and dedicated commitment to the ideals and goals of the Little League program". Dr. Jane Gilmore, Chairman of The Board Of Directors of Little League International, presented the award to Braeden. While in Williamsport, Braeden threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Panama vs. Mexico game.

Cobb Tennis League - a Tennis League for Everyone!!!!

The Cobb Tennis League is a league where you compete against other players of similar ability.  For adults, levels range from NTRP 2.0-5.0.  The 2.0 level is a great opportunity for players who consider themselves 'true beginners' and are experiencing league tennis for the first time. Players register individually and are matched against other players at their ability level.  This is a flex league where you play when it is convenient for you and you can play anywhere in Cobb County where there are tennis courts (parks, clubs, or subdivisions).  There are two seasons each year, a spring season and fall season.  The fall season begins October 22nd. The Cobb Tennis League is a great way to enjoy fun competition and to meet new people!!!  Registration for the fall league is currently in progress.  The entry deadline is October 15th.  For more information and registration brochure, see the Cobb Tennis League web site.

2012 'Fun in the Park' Photo Contest

As you are out enjoying Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs parks and activities, be sure to bring your camera and capture the fun and memories of your sports activities, the beauty of nature and wildlife in the parks, and anything else that shows why you enjoy your day at the park. The 8th Annual "Fun in the Park' Photo Contest will be accepting entries through November 2nd. Enter up to 10 of your best shots for fun and awards! Open to all photographers. Cobb Solid Waste and Keep Cobb Beautiful Join With Cobb Parks

Effective October 1st, Cobb Solid Waste and Keep Cobb Beautiful departments have joined forces with Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs and will now fall under the umbrella of the parks department. The Solid Waste Department, managed by Jonathan Jenkins, provides leadership and support in overseeing the contracted daily operations of environmentally sound solid waste and recycling facilities, provides waste reduction programs in accordance with local, state and federal regulations, promotes stewardship of our communities through litter prevention, beautification, recycling and environmental education. Keep Cobb Beautiful falls under Solid Waste, and focuses on recycling and educational programs. Keep Cobb Beautiful and the park's Natural Resources unit will work together to provide quality educational programming for Cobb residents. SPLOST Projects Update
On March 15, 2011, a referendum on a four-year SPLOST (Special Local Option Sales Tax) was approved by voters. This program will be in effect from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2015. From this SPLOST, Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs will be utilizing $82,023,000 for revitalization, facility renovations and upgrades to parks and facilities. Planning, coordinating and scheduling projects are in their early stages, but you will now be able to see some of the work in progress or soon to begin. Here is a list of current projects:

  • Construction of air quality improvements and interior renovations is on schedule at the Mountain View Aquatic Center. The Ribbon Cutting ceremony is scheduled for Monday, October 22 at 3:30pm.
  • The replacement of the fly system equipment, curtain track hardware and curtains at Anderson Theatre was completed on September 13.
  • The design for the redevelopment of Wallace Park was awarded to Lose & Associates at the August 28, 2012 Board of Commissioners meeting.
  • Four proposals for the design of the rehabilitation of the swimming pool and poolhouse at Sewell park were received on August 23rd and are currently under review.
  • The design/build contract for the rehabilitation of the fields at Noonday Creek Park was awarded to Sports Turf Company, Inc. at the August 28, 2012 Board of Commissioners meeting.
  • Qualifications packages from six historical architectural firms on July 26 for the Hyde Park project and the Board of Commissioners approved the start of negotiations with the highest scoring firm, AMEC, at the September 11, 2012 meeting. Negotiation of scope and fee is underway.
  • The design of new tennis center buildings at Harrison, Terrell Mill and Kennworth Parks is underway and is scheduled for completion in January, 2013.
  • The design of the replacement of crosstie retaining walls at Lions and Wallace Parks has started. Construction of the walls is scheduled for late fall and early winter.
  • Fourteen design proposals for the design of Kennworth Park were received August 9, 2012 and the award of the design contract will be on the agenda of the October 9th Board of Commissioners meeting.
  • Bids were received from five manufacturers for the purchase of scoreboards throughout the Parks system on August 23.
  • An RFP for the rehabilitation of Sandy Plains Park has been sent to Purchasing.
  • An RFP for the design of the seasonal family water feature at Wild Horse Creek Park has been issued and proposals are due October 11, 2012.
  • Lose and Associates has started the master planning process for Powder Springs Park.

For only $20 you can sell your artwork to shoppers seeking out one-of-a-kind gifts for the holiday season. We are now accepting applications for this event, and the deadline is November 13th. Our Gift Box preview party for friends and family will be Friday, November 30th from 6:00pm-8:00pm, and the market will run from December 3rd-15th.

An exhibit from the Cobb County Transition Academies entitled “Smile” will be on display in our gallery space. This is an exhibit showcasing artwork from four Cobb County Transition Academies highlighting artists with intellectual disabilities ages 18-22.

Workshop

Digital Photography using an SLR
The goal of this workshop is to familiarize students with the operation and features of a digital SLR camera, to include using both common and advanced features built into the camera. This workshop stresses ways to make photography more fun and creative. Students will learn about what lenses are best for various types of photography, creative lighting techniques, and the best ways to save, print and archive their images. Students should bring their digital camera and instruction manual to class.

Pumpkin Party

Art a la Carte Workshop

We will also be having our monthly “Art a la Carte” workshop this month on Friday and Saturday, October 19th and October 20th. This month’s theme is “Pumpkin Party” where we will be decorating pumpkins with all sorts of fun designs. There may even be feathers, glitter, and sequins, oh my! These workshops are $5 per child and usually take about 30 minutes to an hour to complete the project. For this particular project, we ask that you please bring your own pumpkin and we will bring the rest!

Adult Basketball Registration in Progress

Winter season adult basketball in just around the corner and registration is currently in progress for teams returning from last winter's season. Returning teams can register online or by mail. In-person registration for new teams and returning teams will be held on Tuesday, October 16th from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Registration will be held at the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs Administrative office located at 1792 County Services Parkway, in Marietta. New Program - Adult Volleyball League
A new league is forming - Adult co-ed volleyball is coming to Ron Anderson Recreation Center. Interested teams or individuals can call Jeff Abrams at (770) 528-8892 for additional information. Registration is Tuesday, October 16th from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs Administrative office located at 1792 County Services Parkway, in Marietta. South Cobb Arts Alliance to Host Summer Concert Series
The free Summer Candlelite Concert series will be held at Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre, 5239 Floyd Road, Mableton. Shows include Men in Blues, October 6th. All concerts begin at 8:00pm and gates open at 7:00pm. Lawn seating is free, but tables in front of the stage are available for $50. Season tables for all five concerts are available for $225.
