2014 'Fun in the Park' Photo Contest

As you are out enjoying Cobb County parks and activities, be sure to bring your camera and capture the fun and memories of your sports activities, the beauty of nature and wildlife in the parks, and anything else that shows why you enjoy your day at the park. The 10th Annual "Fun in the Park' Photo Contest will be accepting entries through November 3rd. Enter up to 10 of your best shots for fun and awards! Open to all photographers. Fall Festival of Fun

Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department along with Cobb County Public Safety, Safe Kids Cobb County and Cobb County 4-H are hosting the 15th Annual Fall Festival of Fun on Friday, October 31st at Jim Miller Park. The event will begin at 4:00pm and end at 7:00pm. This event will provide the children of Cobb County a safe alternative to the traditional Trick-or-Treat in their neighborhoods.

The festival will include arts and crafts, games, inflatable rides, Police and Fire activities, costume and coloring contests, a photo booth and other surprises. Parking, entrance to the park, games, candy and contests are free (there is a fee for concessions and inflatable rides). Come wearing your Halloween costume and be sure to bring a bag to carry all of your candy!

 

The Ultimate Cheer Fest 2014

Cobb County PARKS and Cheertyme will host the 6th Annual Ultimate Cheer Fest at the Cobb Civic Center. This competition will be held on Sunday, November 2nd. The Ultimate Cheer Fest is an opportunity for cheerleaders, ages 5 and up, to compete in cheer and dance. Each team will have 2 minutes and 30 seconds to perform their routine. Every participant will receive a T-shirt and medal as part of their registration fee. Team trophies will be awarded to the top teams. Our top two teams that are awarded the "Grand Champion" title will receive jackets and banners. Spectators are encouraged to support their favorite teams as spirit and sportsmanship awards will be given. Boxerstock 2014

Atlanta Boxer Rescue and presenting sponsors Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic and Unleashed by Petco, are hosting the 7th Annual Boxerstock Music Festival. Boxerstock 2014 will once again be held at Jim Miller Park on Sunday, October 19th. Your ticket grants you access to an entire day of music and family fun from 12:00pm-6:00pm. All proceeds will benefit Atlanta Boxer Rescue.

Boxerstock offers you an entire day of live music from top local performers and nationally known artists, including 2014 American Idol star, Jessica Meuse! Musicians from a variety of genres are on the bill, so there is something for everyone. Comedienne Shelly Ryan will emcee and keep the audience entertained between acts. You will enjoy our vendor booths, food trucks, a silent auction, and pet portraits by Alex Neely (including a vist by Santa!).

This year our Kid's Village is packed with fun things to do! There will be a kids' stage with kid-friendly entertainment, including some of Atlanta's top up-and-coming young artists! Kids will also enjoy inflatables, water walkers (human hamster balls!), face painting, kid's art contest, Scooby Doo and K-9 Kids.

Four-legged family members are welcome too! Well-behaved dogs of all breeds are welcome on-leash or for some friendly play in our off-leash dog park. There will be mini-dog parks provided by C&C Fence Company, "Ask The Vet" Q & A booth staffed by the veterinarians at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic, "Ask The Pros" training Q & A booth, staffed by the trainers at K-9 Coach, canine agility and obedience demonstrations, canine disc dogs and frisbee demos! There will also be a dog costume contest with prizes for most humorous, most creative and scariest dog. Rescue Row is where there will be many adoptable dogs and cats! Microchipping will be available for $25 per dog (please bring proof of ownership and vaccination records).

Bring your own pumpkin and your creativity! We will help your child decorate their pumpkin with a variety of cool (non-carving) materials. Please bring a pumpkin that is easy to handle for your child's age, as well as a box that will fit the pumpkin to carry it home. Parents: this one gets messy, so dress your children appropriately.

On October 4th from 10:00am-12:00pm you’ll come make ceramic items, either hand-built or wheel-thrown. On October 11th from 9:00am-5:00pm you’ll join us for the special Raku Firing. Raku is a specialized high firing done outside. It creates bold metallic and crackle looks on your ceramic items. Bring a pot luck lunch and be prepared to enjoy making beautiful pottery. Other News and Notes

SPLOST Projects Update
On March 15, 2011, a referendum on a four-year SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) was approved by voters. This program, started on January 1, 2012 and will be in effect through December 31, 2015. From this SPLOST, Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs will be utilizing $82,023,000 for revitalization, facility renovations and upgrades to parks and facilities. Planning, coordinating and scheduling projects are in their early stages, but you will now be able to see some of the work in progress or soon to begin. Here is a list of several major projects that have begun since May 1st:

  • The tennis center buildings at Kennworth Park Tennis Center and Terrell Mill Park Tennis Center are nearing completion. Both buildings are dried in with interior work as well as exterior work moving forward.
  • The construction of Kennworth Park Improvements is moving forward. Building A block work is underway, grading of the fields is underway, and the slab has been poured on building B. The field lighting improvements are underway as well.
  • The construction of the new restroom pod at the upper hub and the football concession/restroom building at Lost Mountain Park bids September 11th.
  • The reconstruction of building #2 at Fullers Park has started. The block work is moving forward. The football field concession/restroom has been demolished and reconstruction of the building will start soon.
  • The 'Notice to Proceed' with the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Hyde Farm historical buildings has been issued. Construction is underway.
  • The construction of the fields and replacement of the concession building at Sewell Park has been substantially completed. The maintenance building is also completed.
  • The construction at Sandy Plains Park is underway. Demolition of the fences and building is completed, and grading of the fields and irrigation installation is underway.
  • The improvements at Shaw Park are under construction. Foundations have been poured for the new building and irrigation installation is underway. The new retaining wall near field #4 is completed.
  • Proposals for the design of improvements at Sweat Mountain bid July 24th and the design proposals are currently under review.
  • All originally scheduled improvements have been made at The Art Place - Mountain View. Acoustical improvements to be made with the remaining budget are being assessed.
  • The 'Notice to Proceed' with construction of improvements at Hurt Road Park has been issued and demolition and clearing is completed. Sports field lighting improvements have also been approved by the BOC, and work has begun.
  • A 'Notice to Proceed' with construction has been issued at Lions Park and construction is underway. Demolition of the lower building is completed. Demolition of the interior of the upper building is completed and erosion control work is moving forward. Lighting improvements have also been approved for the park. New sports field lighting poles have been delivered.
  • Construction for the Mable House Arts Center office addition is underway. Two offices will be added to the front of the building and are scheduled to be completed prior to the Christmas season.
  • The design and permitting of the improvements at Powder Springs Park is completed. The construction of the improvements was approved by the BOC August 12th and contracts are underway.
  • The construction of the new football concession/restroom building and the maintenance building near field #3 is completed at Wallace Park.  Building #1 demolition is completed and foundations for the new building have been poured.
  • The 'Notice to Proceed' with the construction of the Wild Horse Creek Park leisure activity pool feature has been issued and construction is underway. Grading is moving forward and the vault for the equipment has been poured.
  • The design for the remainder of the work at Wild Horse Creek Park is underway.

Lost Mountain Tennis Center to Host Charity Tournament
Lost Mountain Tennis Community Tennis Association will host the 2014 Halloween Fright Festival Charity Tennis Tournament October 24th-26th. The tournament will be held at Lost Mountain Tennis Center. The events include adult doubles and mixed doubles, youth singles and parent-child doubles events. All proceeds of the tournament will benefit SafePath Children's Advocacy Center.

Mable House Art Center Upcoming Events

Tickets now on sale for Shrek the Musical! Show Dates are November 7th and 8th at 7:00pm and November 9th at 5:00pm. Tickets are $8 per person ages 13 and up. Children 12 and under are free.
