Volunteers Recognized by the Board of Commissioners

At the March 27th Cobb County Board of Commissioners meeting, four individuals were recognized for outstanding service in helping to provide quality leisure activities to our residents. These individuals symbolize the efforts of over 18,000 volunteers that support 80 recreation programs in the Cobb Park’s system. Congratulations to all the recipients!

National Tennis Tournament to be Held at Harrison Tennis Center

Cobb County will once again play host to the USTA National Open for boys and girls ages 16 and under.  The event will be held at Harrison Tennis Center from May 12th-14th.  This event attracts many of the top players from around the country. Past participants include several players who are currently playing on the professional tour, including rising star, Melanie Oudin. The draw will comprise of 32 boys and 32 girls who are nationally ranked. The competition will begin on Saturday morning with the singles events. Doubles will begin late Saturday afternoon. The tournament will continue through Monday, May 14th, when many of the finals are held. If you want to see some of our nation’s best young players, come out to Harrison Tennis Center during this event. Admission is free. You can also keep up with the tournament draw on the tournament web site.   Many of Cobb's best players will be competing - come out and support some of our country's tennis best!!!!

Toddler Time - Play, Learn, Explore, and Grow Together Outdoors

Toddlers (ages 2-4 years) bring a parent, grandparent or your favorite adult and join us for a fun time learning about NATURE through songs, stories, a nature hike and more. This program is 'TOADally UnFROGettable' and will take place May 15th and 16th at 10:00am-11:30am. The program will be held at Heritage Park, 60 Fontaine Road, Mableton, 30126. Pre-registration is required and the cost per session is only $2.00 per child. Dress for the weather and activities. We will go on a hike and we might get dirty. Bring a picnic lunch for after the program and hike. Adult Summer Basketball Registration

Summer adult basketball is just around the corner. Leagues will be offered at Fullers Recreation Center at Fullers Park, Ward Recreation Center at Lost Mountain Park, and the Ron Anderson Recreation Center at Wild Horse Creek Park. In-person registration for new and returning teams will be Tuesday, May 15th from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Parks and Recreation administrative offices (1792 County Services Parkway, Marietta 30008). The league fee is $320 which includes a 7 game season and post season tournament. 2012 'Fun in the Park' Photo Contest

As you are out enjoying Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs parks and activities, be sure to bring your camera and capture the fun and memories of your sports activities, the beauty of nature and wildlife in the parks, and anything else that shows why you enjoy your day at the park. The 8th Annual "Fun in the Park' Photo Contest will be accepting entries throughout the summer. Enter up to 10 of your best shots for fun and awards! Open to all photographers. Outdoor Pools Opening This Month

The outdoor pools are currently being cleaned and spruced up to open May 29th. Cobb has two outdoor pools: Powder Springs pool and Sewell Park pool. Powder Springs Pool is located at 3899 Brownsville Road in Powder Springs. Sewell Pool, located at 2055 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta.

Pool hours are 1:00pm–5:00pm, Tuesday–Saturday. The pools are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Beginning July 8th, Sewell Park pool will have Sunday hours from 1:00pm-5:00pm. For more information regarding the pools, see our website.

Other News and Notes

Horseshoe League Starting Soon at Larry Bell Park
The Cobb Area Horseshoe League will begin its 30th year of play May 3rd and meets every Thursday at 5:30pm, continuing through September. The league plays at Larry Bell Park, located at 592 Fairground Street in Marietta (courts are on Glover St. near Fairground). All skill levels are welcome and it is free to participate. Volleyball Night at Ron Anderson Recreation Center

Come join us for Volleyball Night at Ron Anderson Recreation Center. We have an open gym for adults and teens who would like to come out and play volleyball. It is FREE to participate - just come on by. Volleyball night is every Wednesday night from 6:00pm-9:00pm. A great way to make some new friends, get some exercise and have some fun!!! Now Offering Arty Parties for Birthdays
Our art centers are now offering Arty Parties for Birthdays! The Mable House Arts Center, The Arts Place - Mountain View and The Arts Station - Big Shanty are available for art-inspired birthday parties! Available party days and times are subject to programming and staff availability. Contact us to schedule your party at least 3 weeks prior to your requested date. Parties are available for children ages 4-12 years old costing $5 to $7 per child, plus a room rental fee of $10 per hour and a refundable deposit of $50. For more information, contact your local arts center.
