Plan Your Child's Summer at Cobb's Summer Camp Expo 2012

Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department will be hosting the 2nd Annual Cobb Summer Camp Expo 2012 on Saturday, March 17th. This event will be held at the Cobb Civic Center from 9:00am-3:00pm. The Summer Camp Expo is your one-stop shop for summer camp programs for your children! There you will find information about day camps, art camps, church camps, overnight camps, performing art programs, tennis camps and much more. The admission is free.

The 2012 Hunt - Cobb's Largest Egg Hunt

Cobb County’s Largest Egg Hunt will take place on Saturday, March 31st, at Jim Miller Park in Marietta. The event begins at 10:00am and ends at 2:00pm. The 2012 Hunt will feature children’s art activities, live entertainment, inflatables, and concessions. The Easter Bunny will be on hand to delight the children and there will be contests, including the Mad Hatter Contest and Decorated Basket Contest. There will also be a musical performance by the 'Theater Project'.

Five egg hunts which will be broken down into age groups. In each hunt, there will be special prize eggs. The schedule of events is as follows:

10:00am - Park opens
10:30am - 3 years & under hunt
11:00am - 4 & 5 years hunt
11:30am - Special Population’s hunt

12:00pm - 6 & 7 years hunt
12:30pm - 8-10 years hunt
1:00pm - Mad Hatter’s Contest / Easter Basket Contest

2:00pm - Park closes

Empty Bowl Brunch Support Local Nonprofit Organizations

The Art Place and Mountain View Arts Alliance staff recently presented MUST Ministries with a check for $1,000 as part of the 2011 Empty Bowl Brunch fundraiser. MUST is a faith-based organization that provides services to people and families in crisis. Other benefactors from the Empty Bowl Brunch include Vietnam Vets and Mountain View Arts Alliance/The Art Place Art Outreach. MVAA is a support group for fundraising, programming and input to make Cobb a more desirable place to live by promoting arts and culture. For more information, visit theartplace.us.

Chubby Checker Performing in Cobb Saturday

A musical favorite, singer Chubby Checker, will "twist" into Cobb County for a performance at 8:00pm, Saturday, March 3rd at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre. Chubby Checker has had a long career and has released more than 20 hit songs that appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart.

Elementary School Tennis League Registration in Progress
The spring season of the Elementary School Tennis League is right around the corner. This is the time to register your 2nd to 5th grade player or team for this fun and exciting league. The Elementary School Tennis League program is a program where participants can represent their elementary school. Players can register individually or as a team. Registration is in progress and ends March 1st. Practices for the spring season begins on Friday, March 16th. Please help spread the word about this wonderful program to all 2nd to 5th graders that you know for another fun season of tennis!!

Other News and Notes

Volunteers needed to help at Leone Hall Price Park

The Friends of Price Park will host a volunteer work day at Leone Hall Price Park 8:30am-11:30am, Saturday, March 24th. Participants will spruce up the park to get ready for the new season. There will be jobs for all ages, so children are welcome. All volunteers will automatically be entered into a raffle to win a prize. RSVP to friendsofpricepark@gmail.com is helpful, but not required. Additional work day details include:

  • Dress appropriately: long sleeves, long pants, closed toe shoes, work gloves, sunscreen, bug spray and eye protection.
  • Bring hand tools or gardening tools and plastic buckets for collecting trash. Be sure to have your name on your tools.
  • Do not bring power tools or work vehicles. Cobb County staff will operate power tools and have gators for ferrying debris and trash.
  • Arrive at 8:30am if you can. If not, someone will be stationed in the parking lot to direct volunteers.

Summer Art Camps at Mable House Arts Center - Modern Mania!!!
Come experience a variety of projects influenced by modern art. From art deco to cubism and color field to abstract expressionism, students will learn about the artists and the techniques used to create their artwork. Artists visited include Chagall, Matisse, Warhol, and Miro. Learn to use a variety of recycled and fine arts materials to create your masterpieces! Theatre, Drumming, Pottery and much more are also being offered in the Mable House Arts Center summer art camp. Registration begins March 13th. For more information, call (770) 819-3285. Home School Art Classes Offered at Mable House Arts Center
The Mable House Arts Center provides a variety of enrichment classes for your child. Courses include Pottery, Academics in Art, Creative Writing, Botanical Drawing and much, much more!!! The 2012 spring quarter begins February 29th and many are starting to fill up! For questions or to register for these impressive classes, call (770) 819-3285.

The Mable House Arts Center Offers Spring Break Camp

Looking for something for the kids to do during spring break? The Mable House Arts Center will be offering Spring Break Camp on April 2nd-5th. This camp will give students the experience of four full days of concentrated art. Each day will be filled with different projects of two and three dimensional multimedia. This fabulous camp is $75 with a $10 supply fee to cover costs of materials. Camp will meet Monday-Thursday from 9:00am-3:00pm and is for children ages 6-12 years. Call the Mable House Arts Center at (770) 819-3285 for information and to register.

Volleyball Night at Ron Anderson Recreation Center

Come join us for Volleyball Night at Ron Anderson Recreation Center. We have an open gym for adults and teens who would like to come out and play volleyball. It is FREE to participate - just come on by. Volleyball night is every Wednesday night from 6:00pm-9:00pm. A great way to make some new friends, get some exercise and have some fun!!! Now Offering Arty Parties for Birthdays
Our art centers are now offering Arty Parties for Birthdays! The Mable House Arts Center, The Arts Place - Mountain View and The Arts Station - Big Shanty are available for art-inspired birthday parties! Available party days and times are subject to programming and staff availability. Contact us to schedule your party at least 3 weeks prior to your requested date. Parties are available for children ages 4-12 years old costing $5 to $7 per child, plus a room rental fee of $10 per hour and a refundable deposit of $50. For more information, contact your local arts center.

Exciting Classes Offered at Ward Recreation Center

Registration in progress for spring programs at Ward Recreation Center. Please visit our website for details on our spring programming! We will be offering classes in Basketball fundamentals for ages K-8, Zumba, Zumba Gold, Piano, Dance, Glee Program-Vocal & Dance, Choy Li Fut, and Choi Kwang Do. We also have rental spaces available for birthday parties, HOA meetings, scout meetings, and more! Summer camp registration will be Thursday, April 19th starting at 6:00pm.

Fair Oaks Lobos Inaugural Flag Football Event

Beginning March 20th, Fair Oaks will offer youth flag football which will include practices, games and championship tournament. T-shirts and flags will be provided. The fee will be $75. Part-time Positions Available - Instructor / Lifeguards
Applications are currently being accepted for 31 lifeguard positions that are available. The positions will be working at one of four indoor aquatic centers: Central Aquatic Center, Mountain View Aquatic Center, West Cobb Aquatic Center and South Cobb Aquatic Center. Applicants must be age 15 or older, must have American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, and must be able to pass water and skills tests. Applications accepted through April 24th.
