Help
Your Favorite Park Win up to $100,000 This Summer!
Did
you know that being active in Cobb Parks this summer could help it win
big in the 'America Is Your Park' campaign? The title of “America’s Favorite
Park” and a $100,000 recreation grant are up for grabs. So get out, play
and vote for your favorite park on LivePositively.com
before September 6, 2011!
'America Is Your Park' encourages families to get active outdoors in parks
across the country and vote to help their favorite win one of three recreation
grants made possible by the Coca-Cola Live Positively initiative. So,
if you like tennis, biking, running, playing ball or just walking your
dog, there’s no better place to enjoy these activities than at Cobb's
parks. This funding can help support needed restoration projects that
overall will make your favorite park a better place for you and your family
to be more active.
Think your park is too small to win? That wasn’t the case for last year’s
winning park, Bear Head Lake State Park, a small park in Ely, Minnesota.
It beat out hundreds of others to be named “America’s Favorite Park,”
receiving more than 1.6 million votes because of support from people in
that community who cared about the park, spread the word, conducted voting
drives and energized their online social networks.
Put your votes and support behind your favorite park by:
• Logging onto LivePositively.com to vote
•
If you do not see your favorite park listed you can request it on the
site and start voting!!!
• Uploading photos from the park to LivePositively.com
• “Checking in” via Facebook Places
• Uploading videos of activities in the park to LivePositively.com (starting
August 10)
You can also help by spreading the word about the contest – urge people
to vote by reminding park visitors, sending emails, posting a status on
Facebook or sending a message on Twitter about why you love your park.
'America Is Your Park' was developed by Coca-Cola in collaboration with
the National Park Foundation, America’s State Parks and the National Recreation
and Park Association. In addition to the top park receiving a $100,000
recreation grant, Coca-Cola will award a $50,000 grant and a $25,000 grant
to the second and third-place parks. These grants will help restore, rebuild
or enhance recreation areas in parks where people can play and be active.
Your favorite park could be crowned “America’s Favorite Park” this summer.
But it’s up to you – so get outdoors, play in the park and don’t forget
to vote!
Cobb
Lifeguards Shine at State Meet
For
the third year in a row the Cobb County aquatic staff won the GRPA Lifeguard
Competition at Lake Oconee. In 2009 and 2010, Cobb won the competition,
but this year was a little extra special. Each year Cobb County brings
two teams to the competition and though they have had one team do well
the past two years, 2011 brought a result no one could have envisioned
- both Cobb County teams finished tied as co-champions of the 2011 GRPA
Lifeguard Competition.
Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) holds the annual lifeguard
competition for GRPA member agencies. This year there were 6 agencies
represented and a total of 9 teams.
All teams are composed of 6 lifeguard staff members and four of the lifeguards
compete in each event. The competition was held on Lake Oconee at Old
Salem Park. The competition is a one day event that consists of 7 events
challenging the lifeguards in a variety of skills they use on a day-to-day
basis. The events for the day included: swim relay, rescue board relay,
capture the flag, team triathlon, a written test, critical incident scenario,
and rescue relay.
The morning started off strong for both Cobb County teams when they went
1st and
2nd in the swim relay. That was followed by the rescue board relay where
the two teams finished 1st and 3rd. Then came capture the flag and the
team triathlon where the Cobb County teams finished 1st and 2nd. The afternoon
events included a written test (Cobb finished 1st and 3rd) to challenge
the lifeguards knowledge and a critical incident scenario. The critical
incident scenario challenges the lifeguards skills in first aid, CPR,
and spinal injury management. The final event is a rescue relay and once
again the teams from Cobb County finished 1st and 2nd to end the day like
it started.
Cobb
County Aquatic Centers have some of the best trained staff in the state
to keep our citizens safe. Congratulations to the lifeguards who represented
Cobb at the state meet and to all Cobb Aquatic facilities' lifeguards
for maintaining this high level of standards.
Fun
Had By All at Fishing Rodeo
The annual fishing rodeo was recently held at Lost Mountain Park. Every
year the Natural Resource Management staff of Cobb County, Parks, Recreation
and Cultural Affairs Department hosts a fishing rodeo for children ages
3—16 years old. The rodeo is free and prizes and trophies are given out
to the first, second and third place winners for the most fish caught.
Everyone who enters the fishing rodeo also receives a prize bag full of
goodies that have been donated by several businesses. Although the weather
was overcast with some rain, over 100 children participated in the rodeo
this year. There were 51 fish caught with the largest fish measuring 15.5
inches which was caught by Blake Goerke winning the Best
Overall Fish trophy. The other winners were:
