January 2011

2011 Encore Series Tickets Now Available

The 2011 Encore Series at Jennie T. Anderson Theatre will begin in late January with a performance of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" by Pebblebrook High School. The Encore Series will also include The Four Lads, Chubby Checker, Lorrie Morgan, Brenda Lee and Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers.

"How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" is a musical based on Shepherd Mead's 1952 book of the same name and will be presented by Pebblebrook High School/Cobb County's 'School of Excellence in the Performing Arts'. After the musical opened on Broadway the show won seven Tony Awards and the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The show runs from January 27th-30th and February 3rd-February 6th.

The Four Lads will perform on Saturday, February 12th. The Four Lads began their professional career in 1950 and soon after got a gig at a dinner club in New York called Le Ruban Bleu and produced a record in 1953 that quickly turned gold. More than 50 years later, The Four Lads continue to capture hearts across the country.

Chubby Checker, one of the most notable performers of the 60s, will twist his way into the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre on March 5th. Chubby Checker has had a long career and released more than 20 hit songs that appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart. 'The Twist' recently topped the list of most popular singles to have appeared in the Hot 100 since 1958.

Lorrie Morgan is an American country music star. She has charted more than 25 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Singles charts, with three number one hits. She has recorded more than 15 studio albums. Morgan made her first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry at age 13 with her father George Morgan who was also a country music singer. She will be performing March 19th.

Brenda Lee will come to Jennie T. Anderson Theatre on April 2nd. She's had 37 hit songs since the 1960s and is best known for the hit songs 'I'm Sorry', and 'Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree', which has been a holiday standard for more than 50 years.

Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers are scheduled to appear on April 16th. Together, they were one of the most successful country music acts of the 70s and 80s. Their biggest hits together included, 'All the Gold in California', 'Broken Lady' and 'She Used to Be Somebody's Baby.

The Jennie T. Anderson Theatre is located at 548 South Marietta Parkway, Marietta. To purchase tickets or for more information, call (770) 528-8490 or visit ticketmaster.com.

'Bring one for the Chipper' Offers Convenient Tree Recyclying

As a part of a state wide effort to reuse Christmas trees, Keep Cobb Beautiful is hosting more than 13 convenient sites where area residents can drop off their trees to be recycled. In addition to providing residents with an easy and environmentally-conscious tree disposal solution, recycled trees are put to good use by making mulch used to beautify local schools and parks. Precious landfill space is also saved because the average Christmas tree weighs 20 pounds and fills almost as much landfill space as a washing machine.

Most sites will be manned by volunteer organizations from 9:00am-4:00pm. No other items will be accepted at sites. Cobb County Parks sites will accept trees through January 8th. Home Depot sites will accept trees only on Saturday, January 8th.  Cobb parks' sites are listed below:

  • *Lost Mountain Park, 4845 Dallas Hwy., Powder Springs, GA 30127
  • Fullers Park, 3499 Robinson Rd., Marietta, GA 30067
  • *Sewell Park, 2085 Lower Roswell Rd., Marietta, GA 30067
  • Noonday Creek Park, 489 Hawkins Store Rd., Kennesaw, GA 30144
  • Harrison Park, 2650 Shallowford Rd., Marietta, GA 30066

(*Seedlings given away on January 8, while supplies last)

To find additional sites near you, or to volunteer at a site, visit cobbcounty.org/kcb. You may also call Keep Cobb Beautiful at (770) 528-1135. 'Bring One for the Chipper' is sponsored statewide by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs' 'Keep Georgia Beautiful' program, Georgia Power Company, The Home Depot, The Davey Tree Company, Cobb EMC, WXIA-TV and local Keep America Beautiful affiliates. Davey Trees and the Cobb Parks chipper locations will have free mulch available to county residents after January 8th.

Tennis Programs at Harrison Tennis Center

Junior Development Programs - What's up for kids at HTC in 2011? In the beginning there were beginner tennis classes. But what about after? We have an ongoing junior development program here at HTC, featuring our Future Stars and Baseliners programs. Once kids get a taste of tennis, learning the basics in beginner classes, they can graduate to a higher skill-level class. Please inquire at the HTC office on how best to contact one of the coaches for more information. They'd be happy to set up an evaluation lesson for your child!

Tired of the winter weather already? Summer camps are only 6 months away and Harrison Tennis Center has all you need for the summer. Look for summer camp registration forms at the HTC office beginning in January.

Ladies' Tennis Drills - Ladies, come out to Harrison Tennis Center and improve your game by enrolling in one of the specialty drill classes offered by USPTA professional, Randy Hancock.
