Survivor and Starship Coming to MHBA

The Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre continues to bring great acts to metro Atlanta this summer including Survivor, Starship, and John Michael Montgomery.   Survivor and Starship will be perfoming August 13th

Survivor's brand of melodic, hard AOR netted the group several hits through the '80s, including two smash themes from Rocky films. The group's big break came in 1982 when Sylvester Stallone commissioned them to write the theme to Rocky III; the result, "Eye of the Tiger," was an instant hit with its bombastic opening riff and anthemic chorus. It spent six weeks at number one on the Billboard charts and pushed the accompanying album of the same name over the one million sales mark. They had two Top Ten hits in 1985 with "High On You" and "The Search Is Over." The band's theme from Rocky IV, "Burning Heart," provided their second biggest hit in 1986.

Mickey Thomas is the owner of the soaring voice that propelled Starship through the ’80s and ‘90s. With his soulful and compelling vocals, he has established himself as one of rock music’s most recognizable stars. Backed by the power of his vocals, Jefferson Starship immediately scored a #1 hit with “Jane”. With this new sound and powerful new vocals, the group was renamed 'Starship' and continued to record an amazing string of hits including “No Way Out”, “We Built This City”, “Sara”, and received an Oscar Nomination for the #1 hit “Nothing Gonna Stop Us Now" from the movie “Mannequin.” Other top hits include: “Find Your Way Back,” “Stranger,” “Laying It On the Line” and “It's Not Over Till It’s Over,” which became Major League Baseball’s theme in 1987.

More great acts will be perfoming this summer, including John Michael Montgomery, who will perform September 10th. Individual and season tickets are on sale at ticketmaster.com. The Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre is located at 5239 Floyd Road in Mableton. For more information on concert dates and show times, visit mablehouse.org or call (770) 819-7765.

2010 Ovation Awards

The Cobb Arts Board and Friends of the Arts, Inc. are pleased to announce the 2010 Ovation Awards, an annual awards event to recognize individuals and organizations that make significant contributions to the arts in Cobb County. The arts are alive and well in Cobb County. Imagine what the world – OUR world in Cobb County – would be like without the arts. Creativity is everywhere in our community. From theatres to parks to arts centers to studios, we are constantly aware of the importance of the arts in our lives. It is once again time to celebrate the arts and to recognize special individuals who tirelessly contribute to making our lives more beautiful and more “artistic” every single day. On behalf of the Cobb Arts Board and Friends of the Arts, the Ovation Awards will be presented on October 4th at The Earl Smith Strand Theatre.

A nomination form can be found on the 'Ovation Awards' page (click on link above). This form provides a simple and effective way for you to gather and present the information needed for the judging panel to select this year’s final nominees. A nomination form is required for each person who is nominated. Nominations can easily be submitted by email to eweaver@cobbcounty.org. You may also take them to our main Parks office at 1792 County Services Parkway or they can be mailed. All nominations are due in the Cobb Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs office on County Services Parkway on August 27th by 4:00pm.

Members of the Cobb Arts Board and Friends of the Arts invite you to attend the awards presentation and encourage you to nominate outstanding artists (of all kinds) and sincerely thank you for your involvement and contributions in the arts.

“Her Daily Concerns”

Reception - August 5th from 6:00pm–8:00pm.

"An Interdisciplinary Study of Worldwide Issues Affecting Women”: This global collaborative project is an installation of work created after the student/artists have researched issues that women face around the world and created the artwork elements inspired by their research. We use these elements to create seven different podiums each addressing issues specific to the women in the continent the podium represents. These podiums feature fine art prints, a table runner and a wooden bowl. The fine art prints have images that address issues the students discovered through their research, and the runner has concerns of women around the globe face printed onto it. The bowl also has embellishments and is a receptive vessel that participants/viewers can write their concerns and observations on slips of paper provided and they can put them in the bowl. Other participants can read these concerns and add to them by writing on the slips of paper as they want to respond. The audience can walk through the installation and also interact with it as they are inspired and informed.
