Happy
New Year from Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs!
The
holiday season was a magical time for the Cobb County Parks, Recreation
and Cultural Affairs Department. Perhaps you attended dinner with Santa
and told Santa that all-important Christmas wish or you went to our annual
'Candy Cane Hunt' where hundreds of children searched for the 'blue' prize
candy cane, made gingerbread houses and roasted marshmallows. Possibly
you attended
a performance of 'Home for the Holidays' at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre
or had breakfast during a performance at St. Nick's Café. Let’s not forget
the yummy lunches that Mable’s Tea Room served or the fun the children
had at The Holly Jolly Art House! No one will forget the chilly nights
of the menorah lighting at East Cobb Park or the lighting of their 40
foot Christmas tree! The 2009 holiday season provided Cobb County residents
of all ages with many wonderful memories and good times. On behalf of
all the staff at Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department,
we would like to wish you a "Happy New Year!”

Cobb
County Selected to Host ASA 18 & Under Gold Nationals
The
Amateur Softball Association (ASA) recently announced that Cobb
County will be the new site for the 2010 ASA Girls’ 18 & Under Gold
National Championships. Legislation passed last month at the ASA’s national
convention necessitated the tourney’s move from Oklahoma City to another
site. Cobb County was chosen from a list of potential sites and will host
the tourney August 1st-7th at the Lost Mountain Softball
Complex. Cobb last hosted the 18 & Gold Nationals in 2004 and
2001, making it the only site other than Oklahoma City to have held this
prestigious tournament more than one time since its inception in 1996.
The tourney will feature 64 of America’s most elite 18-under girls’ fast-pitch
softball teams. The tournament will feature pool play August 2nd-3rd,
followed by a double elimination tournament. For more information, contact
the Al Bishop Softball Complex at (770) 528-8860.

Cobb
Gymnasts Help Out During the Holidays
In
lieu of Secret Santa gifts to each other, Cobb Challengers Gymnastics
Club participated for the second year in an Angel Tree, sponsored by the
Heritage Presbyterian Church. The project was coordinated by Susan Korbett,
a parent in the club. The gymnasts and their families were able to sponsor
15 children and provide toys and clothes for those less fortunate during
this holiday season. Cobb Challengers consists of boys' and girls' competitive
teams, AAU as well as USA Gymnastics, and has a membership of approximately
110 gymnasts that train and compete at the Cobb
Gymnastics Center. This was a great way for these athletes to give
back to the needy in our community during this holiday season.
Holiday
Schedule
During
the month of January, there are 2 holidays that may affect facility schedules
and programs. January 1st is New Year's Day and January
18th is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Although most parks
will be open these days, many facilities will be closed or will have shortened
schedules. If you are involved in programs and classes during this
time, be sure to contact your facility to confirm the program schedule.
