East Cobb Park Cuts Ribbon on Playground for Children With Disabilities

The Friends for the East Cobb Park and local elected officials gathered with Resurgens Charitable Foundation on September 15th to officially cut the ribbon on East Cobb Park's 'all abilities' playground to benefit area children with disabilities. Resurgens Charitable Foundation donated the playground to the park. In attendance with the elected and county officials, was Resurgens Charitable Foundation members Dr. Joe Chandler, Executive Director, Resurgens Charitable Foundation and East Cobb resident and Resurgens physician and President of the Foundation board, Dr. Kay Kirkpatrick.

Dr. Kirkpatrick, who spear-headed the project for her home community, said “The residents of East Cobb are so fortunate to have this beautiful park to enjoy. It has become the heart of this community and is enjoyed by both young and old. Now, it can also be enjoyed by the children who need it most – kids with disabilities.”

The foundation was formed in 2001 to raise funds to build specially designed “all-abilities” playgrounds in Metro Atlanta. This is the second playground donated in Cobb. The funding comes through donations from Resurgens Orthopaedics’ employees, physicians, patients, family, friends and business associates.

Other News and Notes

Cobb Singles League - Cobb's Tennis League for Everyone!!!!

The Cobb Singles League is a tennis league where you compete against other players of similar ability.  There are leagues available for adults and youth.  For adults, levels range from NTRP 2.0-5.0.  The 2.0 level is a great opportunity for players who consider themselves 'true beginners' and are experiencing league tennis for the first time. For youth, the categories are divided by age group and ability level.  Players register individually and are matched against other players at their ability level.  This is a flex league where you play when it is convenient for you and you can play anywhere in Cobb County where there are tennis courts (parks, clubs, or subdivisions).  There are two seasons each year, a spring season and fall season.  The fall season begins October 19th. The Cobb Singles League is a great way to enjoy fun competition and to meet new people!!!  Registration for the fall league is currently in progress.  The entry deadline is October 9th.  For more information and registration brochure, see the Cobb Singles League web site .

The Art Station – Big Shanty News

The “Art on the Lawn” Arts and Crafts Fair has been cancelled for 2009. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope to offer this event again in the future.

If you’ve always wanted to learn to play the piano, but don’t want to spend years on lessons, The Art Station – Big Shanty will be hosting an “Instant Piano (For Hopelessly Busy People)” workshop on Tuesday, October 20th from 6:00pm–9:00pm.

The Art Station – Big Shanty is proud to finally offer a “Manga Drawing” course for ages 10–14. If your child or a child you know is fascinated with manga and anime (Japanese comics and cartoons), then this class is a perfect fit. The class will meet on Wednesday evenings from 5:00pm-6:30pm.
