Public
Input Meeting Scheduled for March 9th
There will
be a public input meeting for the Bullard-Stockton Property Master Plan
on Monday, March 9th, from 7:00pm-8:30pm at the West
Cobb Senior Center, located in Lost Mountain Park, 4915 Dallas Highway,
Powder Springs. The meeting will follow an open house format where residents
may view various displays around the room and have the opportunity to
ask questions, provide comments, and discuss the planning for future development
of this passive recreation area. District Commissioner Helen Goreham and
other Cobb County representatives, along with the planning firm, Lose
& Associates will be available to answer questions.
Federal
Law Mandates Modifying All Public Pool Drains
Cobb's aquatic center pools are currently being refitted with new main
drain covers in every pool. If you see scuba divers working in the bottom
of the pools at one of Cobb's aquatic centers, they are drilling and cutting
the concrete to mount new stainless steel drain covers that comply with
the Virginia Graeme Baker Act (VGB Act).
The
VGB Act requires that all drains on public pools be retrofitted with drain
covers that are stamped as being National Science Foundation (NSF) approved
and certified by a professional engineer. This law came into effect on
December 19, 2008. Public pools, according to the VGB Act includes: government
agency swimming pools, private neighborhood pools, apartment and condominium
pools, health club pools, and hotel pools. Many of the non-government
agency pool operators/owners are still not aware that their pools are
included in the Federal Law.
The
law was passed to address pools and spas with drains still being operated
with single drains with direct suction lines going to the main circulating
pumps. These type of drain systems enable persons being entrapped in the
drain cover itself. If drains of this nature are known to be operating,
operators/owners should close them or not open them for the summer until
they have been corrected. However, only addressing the most hazardous
drains will not satisfy the federal law and operators/owners should change
out every main drain cover with VGB Act compliant drain covers.
If you know
of or have a neighborhood swimming pool or other type of public pool,
you should check with the operators/owners to see if they have been retrofitted
with new VGB Act compliant drain covers. You can contact the Health Department
or most pool supply and/or service companies for further information.
Cobb
County aquatic centers are one of the first in the nation's public pools
to come in compliance with the VGB Act. You can come by the Cobb's
aquatic centers to swim knowing that the pools remain safe and have been
retrofitted with the extra safe drain covers.
