Time is Now to Register for Youth Spring Sports and Activities It may still be cold outside, but now is the time to register for youth sports and activities for the spring season. Many sports and activities have registrations in January, including baseball, softball, soccer, track, tennis, and BMX. Our youth league programs are administered by volunteer organizations, so dates and times of registrations will vary. For specific information on the activities your child is interested in participating, click on the following links: baseball, softball, soccer, track, tennis, and BMX. Many registration deadlines are fast approaching - don't be left out!!!! Special Olympics Winter Games The Special Olympics Georgia Indoor Winter Games will be held January 18-20 in Cobb County. The competition sports are basketball, floor hockey, bowling, powerlifting, artistic gymnastics, ice skating and roller skating. Over 2000 people are expected to participate in the games. Cobb athletes will compete in bowling, roller skating, artistic gymnastics, powerlifting, basketball, and basketball team and individual skills. Artistic gymnastics will now take place during the GA Special Olympics Winter Games. The event will be held in the beautiful, newly renovated Gymnastics Center in the Larry Bell Park complex. Competition will be on Saturday, January 19th. Girls competition will take place beginning at 8:30am followed by the boys competition in the afternoon. Cobb
Tennis Professional Named GPTA 'Professional of the Year'
Auditions for Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration People interested in performing at the 22nd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration will have the opportunity to audition in January. Audition dates are: 1:00pm, Saturday, January 5th and 6:00pm, Tuesday, January 8th. The auditions will be held at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre, located at the Cobb County Civic Center. Those selected from the audition will take place in the January 21st ceremony sponsored by the Cobb County NAACP and Cobb County Government. The ceremony will also take place at Jennie T. Anderson Theatre. The event is free and open to the public. The ceremony will include the annual presentation of the "Living the Dream" award to a member of the community who exemplifies the ideals of Dr. King. Because 2008 marks the 40th anniversary of King's death, officials have designated Martin Luther King Day with the theme "Beyond the Mountaintop - Keeping the Dream Alive: Remembering the Past, Forging Toward the Future." Candy Cane Hunt a Big Success The annual Candy Cane Hunt was once again a big success!!! Over 1800 children and adults participated in the event. If you attended, we would like to hear from you. Cobb Teams Rise to the Challenge The Special Olympics Cobb Holiday Basketball Tournament was recently held at the Cobb County Civic Center. The Cobb Bulldogs became the champions by defeating the Douglas County Warriors in their finals. The Cobb Hawks came in second place in their division by being runners-up to the team from Cherokee County. Congratulations on the strong showing by our winning Cobb teams!!!! Sweetwater Tennis Manager Named PTR National Tester Congratulations to Sweetwater Tennis Center facility manager Charlie McCoy for being named as a Professional Tennis Registry National Tester with Specialized Certification in Wheel Chair Tennis for 2008. The state of Georgia has 3 other members with that certification and we are proud that one of our own is among the 4 for the entire state. This is the first award a Cobb County employee has received from this prestigious professional tennis organization. New
Program Offered - Teens Getting Fit!!! March
1 - April 12 Scorekeepers Needed at Al Bishop Complex The Al Bishop Softball Complex is seeking competent part-time scorekeepers for hire during the upcoming 2008 league and tournament seasons. Play begins March 8th and will continue through October. League games are played Monday through Friday nights beginning March 17th at 6:30pm, and tournaments are played each weekend from March 8th through Labor Day. Applicants must be at least 16 years old, and must commit to a minimum work schedule of two weeknights and one weekend shift. Additional hours are often available. Scorekeeping experience is preferred, but not required. If interested, please contact Daniel Brown or Brooks Tinsley at (770) 528-8860.
The Art Station – Big Shanty is looking for new art instructors. We specifically need artists experienced in teaching drawing and watercolor to children ages 6 – 10, but instructors versed in any medium and any age group are welcome to apply.
