Cobb County Celebrates 175 Years!

Celebrating 175 years is a major milestone in any community. On December 3, 2007 the County of Cobb will celebrate its 175th Birthday - and every birthday needs a party!!! The Cobb County Board of Commissioners invite you to attend a high energy evening featuring some of the best performing artists from Cobb County. This show-stopping evening will include performances by the Cobb County Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts touring company, the Cobb Symphony Orchestra, Dance Stop Studio and many more.

The evening of entertainment will begin when your feet hit the plaza with an outdoor performance by the Kennesaw Mountain High School Marching Band. This amazing band placed third in the Bands of America competition last fall. Upon entering the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre you will be surrounded by the sights and sounds of the arts in Cobb. Local artists have been diligently working to create works of art depicting well know scenes around Cobb County. While you view these works of art, members of the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra will serenade you.

The birthday performance begins at 7:30pm. The Georgia Ballet has prepared an outstanding Balanchine performance; the Ruth Mitchell Dance Theatre will have you on your feet with a specially created birthday hip hop selection and Theatre in the Square will have you tappin’ your toes with a selection from the Sanders Family Christmas. Miss Cobb County 2007, Christina McCauley, will present a beautiful operatic ballad during the evening’s presentation. Many other surprises and gifts await you as Cobb County celebrates its 175th birthday at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on December 3rd. As a gift to the citizens of Cobb County, all tickets are complimentary. You may pick up your complementary tickets to this event at The Art Place – Mountain View, The Art Station – Big Shanty, The Mable House Arts Center, Cobb Civic Center or the Cobb Communication Department from 10:00am – 5:00pm, Monday - Friday. Tickets are limited and will be available beginning November 1st on a first-come, first-served basis.  Go to www.cobbcounty.org for more information.  Happy Birthday COBB!!!

Harrison Tennis Center Receives Award

USTA Georgia has named Harrison Tennis Center as USTA Georgia’s ‘Member Organization of the Year’ for 2007 . This award recognizes the outstanding services rendered to a USTA member organization in Georgia. Selection is made on the basis of service to the tennis community, service to the organization’s members and service to the game of tennis. The Harrison staff received this award at the awards luncheon held Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center.

Harrison Tennis Center, located in northeast Cobb on Shallowford Road, is Cobb’s largest public tennis facility with 16 courts. It is also one of the busiest tennis facilities in the state, with numerous instructional programs, tournaments and league play. Harrison was selected as one of 8 sites in the country to serve as a prototype facility for the new 36/60 program, a program that teaches young children (ages 4-8) tennis on mini-tennis courts using sponge-like tennis balls. Harrison hosts more league teams than any other facility in the Atlanta area, with 277 ALTA and USTA teams participating this past year. Harrison also hosts 7 USTA sanctioned tournaments, including the USTA National 16’s Open and two state championships.

This makes the third time in the past 6 years that a Cobb tennis facility has received this award and the second time for Harrison Tennis Center. Harrison received this award in 2002 and Lost Mountain Tennis Center received this award in 2004. Harrison also was awarded the USTA ‘Outstanding Tennis Facility Award’ in 2004.

As the Georgia recipient of this award, Harrison Tennis Center will be the Georgia representative for the southern and national ‘Member Organization of the Year’ awards. Congratulations to facility manager, Steve Lottinger and his staff for maintaining the highest of standards in providing services to the community!!!!!
